This is the Mercedes X Class. The worlds first premium Pickup. Its one of those occasions where something happens and you ask – why has this not been done before? It makes perfect sense. If you want a Pickup you go to Ford, Toyota, Nissan, who all do great options, but hardly premium/luxury options. The pickup has moved on from a workhorse on the farm. For many they are a daily driver. The Mercedes X Class is proof that one of the biggest car companies in the world agrees.
As with most concepts very few facts are known but visually you can bet it will look close to this – and we think it looks brilliant.
Along with these Official Concept images Mercedes has also released details on two options. The ‘Stylish Explorer’ – for the school run, and the ‘Powerful Adventurer’ – Offroader that we all know you will probably never take offroad. We think perhaps the marketing department were a little busy with Lewis Hamilton’s Snapchat when they came up with these.
Mercedes have also confirmed a V6 Diesel will top the range with their 4matic all wheel drive as standard. You would also think AMG will do the business on it further down the line.
We can see this selling in the quadrillions. Our guess is you will be able to ride on a sea of X classes from Dubai to London. You must agree that Mercedes are filling a big big hole with this offering. With the company car tax likely to be in the same region as a small fiesta and the average 4 door saloon costing 10 times as much (tax write-off due to its payload capacity in the UK) expect to see plenty of suits driving them too.
Could the X Class be the vehicle to re-write the Pickup market just like the M Class was instrumental in re-writing the 4×4/SUV market? Time will tell but it has every possibility.
